Just like how pain characterizes fibromyalgia, bleeding characterizes hemorrhoids. It is very common and the bleeding can either be external or internal. Bleeding occurs when the anal tissues and hemorrhoidal veins are swollen and irritated. Usually the sufferer doesn’t notice the bleeding until it is spotted on the toilet paper or stools.
When a person has hemorrhoids, there is constant pressure on the anal veins and rectum. This is what causes the hemorrhoids to bleed. So what causes hemorrhoids in the first place?
There are several factors such a poor diet, a sedentary lifestyle, straining during constipation, working a job that requires you to sit for long hours, pregnancy, obesity, etc. are all factors that can play a role in causing hemorrhoids.
When the veins and tissues around the rectum are inflamed, bleeding can be a consequence. In most cases, if the bleeding is not severe, it can be treated at home by applying direct pressure on the bleeding with a sterile cotton swab.
Treating the bleeding hemorrhoid in a timely manner is crucial to preventing the condition from exacerbating and resulting in hemorrhoids that are larger and more painful. In the event that you have heavy bleeding, immense pain or if the hemorrhoid is protruding through the anus (prolapsed), you should immediately see a doctor. This requires professional medical attention.
If the bleeding is mild, you can use home remedies and take care of the symptoms yourself. You can purchase over-the-counter creams, ointments, pads, suppositories, etc. to help manage and treat the bleeding hemorrhoids.
You will want to look for products which contain a few active ingredients that not only reduce bleeding but also soothe the irritated and swollen tissues. Ideally, products which contain aloe vera, witch hazel and petroleum jelly are recommended. Aloe vera has anti-bacterial properties which makes it very beneficial.
Your diet will need to be high in fiber and you should aim to hydrate yourself well by drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water daily. This will encourage good bowel movement and prevent constipation.
Your diet plays a big part in treating hemorrhoids. Avoid spicy foods, caffeine, too much carbohydrates, alcohol, junk food, processed foods, etc. You will need to adopt a diet that is clean and has generous amounts of fruit and vegetables. In fact, for the long term prevention of hemorrhoids, it would be a good idea to consult a dietician and get your diet in order.
Not only will you prevent hemorrhoids, but you will strengthen your immune system and be preventing a plethora of diseases from taking hold of your health and ravaging your body. Your diet is really that important. You’ll be neglecting it at your own peril.
Good hygiene is also important. Keep your anal region dry and clean. This will reduce any itching and irritation. The conditions will not be suitable for bacteria to thrive either. You should use wet wipes after a bowel movement to reduce the friction on the sensitive areas. Make sure to completely pat the area dry after wiping.
You may also take warm baths to cleanse the area and soothe the inflamed hemorrhoids. You could use a hair dryer set to a low temperature to dry your affected areas so that you do not have to make contact with the painful hemorrhoids. Wear cotton undergarments which will encourage airflow and keep the area dry.
Finally, do not scratch, pick or prod the affected area. Some people have an investigative nature and can’t leave things well alone to heal on their own. A watched pot doesn’t boil. Do what you have to and let your body heal on its own time. Wear loose clothing so that there is no chafing. See a doctor for proper advice. That pretty much sums it up.
