Three Reasons Why Hemorrhoids Are so Common

If you’ve been reading the past few entries, you already know the reasons why hemorrhoids are one of the most annoying and uncomfortable complications out there. Although there are astounding and even fun facts about it, you wouldn’t want one – or a couple – to appear on your anal and rectal areas. But wait, did you know that two-thirds of the population in the United States are – and will – experience hemorrhoids? Well, this means that you have a chance of it occurring to you, simply because it’s really common and it can be caused by a lot of factors. Well, it’s time to know some of the reasons why it is so:

Obesity is common in the United States

One of the main causes of hemorrhoids is the state of being overweight. Being TOO overweight is called obesity, and it is a severe health problem in the United States. As of today, 35% of Americans are obese – that’s more than 1/3 of the population. This is probably so mainly because of the abundance of junk food and fast food chains in the country.

So, how exactly does obesity cause hemorrhoids? Well, it can be attributed to the lack of fiber in the diet: bear in mind that if everyone had sufficient amounts of this nutrient, no one would be obese. Having a diet devoid of this causes constipation or hardened stools, which ultimately leads to hemorrhoids. Aside from which, the extra fat and flab on the belly can exert a lot of pressure on the anus and rectum, causing the blood vessels to swell, causing hemorrhoids.

Women get pregnant

Another reason why hemorrhoids grow is because of pregnancy. Bear in mind that one of the hindrances of carrying a child in your womb is hemorrhoids. Regardless if planned or not, hemorrhoids are bound to appear, especially after three months. Why? Well, as the fetus grows, it adds a lot of pressure on the waist of the mother, which in turn exerts it on the anal and rectal areas, causing hemorrhoid growth.

Although preventive care can be applied by eating a lot of fiber-rich food, it usually fails. Since there are a lot of drug prohibitions on pregnant women, topical treatment, through anti-inflammatory ointments and herbal astringents, are being widely used.

Constipation exempts no one

Anyone can get constipated, meaning anyone can get hemorrhoids. As mentioned earlier, one of the main causes of this complication is the lack of fiber in the diet. Aside from which, it can also be caused by insufficient water in the system, as well as a side effect of many drugs. Also, it can be caused by improper bowel movement, especially if you’re the type to hold on to it whenever you get the urge.

Getting rid of constipation is rather easy – eat a lot of green leafy vegetables, nuts, beans, fruits as well as whole grain products, since these contain a lot of fiber. Make sure to drink at least eight glasses of water a day, in order to aid digestion and help out in bowel movement.

Keep in mind that even if hemorrhoids are pretty common, they can easily be quelled by a proper diet, topical medicine and by preventing and relieving constipation.
